The Sam Houston State women’s golf team captured its second straight tournament in as many weeks, taking the title Tuesday at the UTRGV Invitational.

Heather Shake also won her second individual title, shooting the low round of the tournament, firing a 72 to win by a stroke over Lexi Brooks from HBU.

The team also shot the best round of the tournament, carding a 295 on Tuesday to secure a seven-shot victory over HBU.

“The event was very windy and the conditions really tested us for all three rounds,” women’s coach Tommy Chain said. “This team has consistently had their best round on the final day which says something about their competitive spirit.”

In addition to Shake, the Kats had three other golfers finish in the top 10 with Jenna Phillips finishing tied for 4th at 12-over par, just two strokes back of Shake after matching her low round of 72. Hannah Alberto shot a 74 on Tuesday and finished in the tie for 8th.

Gianti Mahardhika bounced back after a tough second round to shoot a 77 and finish tied for 16th at 22-over. Kari Bush was tied for 25th after an 82 on Tuesday.

“Heather, Jenna, and Hannah all had three strong rounds and Kari and Tika covered the fourth score,” Chain said. “Even though our next event is three weeks away we still want to carry the momentum we have into that event.”

The next action for the women will be March 27-28 at the HBU Huskie Intercollegiate.
