MONTGOMERY -- With 18 holes in the book, the Sam Houston women’s golf team is in a tie for first with Houston Baptist following an opening round 293 on Monday.

Playing at the par 71 Woodforest Golf Club, the Kats held the lead for most of the day, before dropping a few shots late in the round.

“I’m very proud of the girls,” said head coach Brandt Kieschnick. “We held the lead most of the day and we were able to stick to our game plan. Our goal is to win the day all three days and we did that today.”

Hannah Alberto led the Kats with a 72 and is two strokes back of the lead in third place. The freshman was one under though 16 holes, but closed with a pair of bogies to finish 1-over after the first day.

“It was kind of tough out there with the pin placements, but I tried to make sure I was as comfortable and as soon as I was comfortable it was easier to hit the shots I have practiced,” Alberto said. “Since we were playing twosomes I knew I had a tendency to play quicker so I just had to focus on slowing down a little bit.”

A stroke back of Alberto is Jenna Phillips and Gianti Mahardhika who both fired 73’s in the opening round. They are in a tie for sixth place. Heather Shake is in 14th after a 75 and Kari Bush shot a 77 putting her in 22nd place.
