Sam Houston freshman Hanna Alberto has picked up this summer right where she left off in the spring. Following a runner up finish at the Southland Conference championships, Alberto has won back-to-back tournaments this summer.
“We feel like her progression as a golfer has just been continuing this summer,” said head coach Brandt Kieschnick. “She was getting better as the year went on and I think she is applying that in these summer tournaments. We are just so proud of what she has been doing.”
Last week Alberto tied for first at the Texas Golf Association 2017 Women's Stroke Play Championship played at The Clubs of Kingwood-Island Course on June 22 and 23.
Alberto shot a 70 the first day and a 73 the second day to finish with a three under par 143 at the par 73 course. The final round was first postponed due to steady rain and lightning and later cancelled with the rain having rendered the course unplayable.
Her 143 put Alberto in a three-way tie for first. She birdied the seventh, 10th, and 11th holes the first day and eagled the 15th. She birdied the sixth hole the second day.
“There are so many great players in this state and I am glad I got to compete with them,” Alberto said. “On this golf course you must pin point where you are going to leave your ball, and I tried to manage that difficultly.”
Then on Thursday she took home the Houston Golf Association Eddie Burke Young Houstonian title. Alberto finished 1-under for the tournaments, closing with a 2-under 70 on the final day.
She opened her final round strong, with birdies on three of her first six holes. She also had a tournament-best 14 consecutive holes without a bogey.
This past season, Alberto became the sixth women's golfer to be named to the Southland Conference first team. She was the runner up at the Southland championships after shooting a 2-under 69 in the final round.
Alberto led the Bearkats this season in scoring with a season average of 74.59. Six times she finished in the top 10 and saved her best round for he last with the 69 at the conference championship.
Next up for Alberto will be attempting to qualify for the US Women's Armature Championship. The sectional qualifier will be held July 10 at Bay Oaks Country Club in Houston.
