Jenna Phillips and the Sam Houston women’s golfers are out to a lead after the first round of the Little Rock Golf Classic.
Phillips shot a 2-under par 70 and has a one stroke lead heading into round 2. She opened her day strong, with three birdies on her first nine holes, and then closed with nine straight pars.
“Jenna's ball striking was very good today and she never was in any kind of trouble from tee-to-green,” said coach Tommy Chain. “She made some crucial long putts in tense situations which resulted in her finishing a solid round of two under par. She stayed focused and relaxed throughout the round.”
The Bearkats will carry a three stroke lead in to Monday after a 298 score. They lead Jacksonville State and Missouri State and lead by four shots over Southland foe Central Arkansas.
“The field here in Arkansas is a good field of teams,” Chain said. “The course is very challenging with a lot of elevation changes and tree lined fairways. You have to stay focused all day or you can make a big number out here. The Bearkats did a great job of maintaining focus throughout the 18 holes.”
Round two of the three-day event will get startted for the Bearkats at 10:10 Monday morning.
