The Sam Houston State women posted another top finish this week as they took third at the UTRGV Invitational on Tuesday.

The Kats, started the day in 6th place, moving up the leader board after posting a team score of 297, the top team score of the day.

“On day one, the wind blew hard from the south,” said coach Tommy Chain. “A front came through overnight and we found ourselves with a different course as a hard north wind blew today, with all the holes playing difficult. The team was focused and relaxed and produced a final round which turned out to be 9 strokes lower than the next best team score.”

Hanna Alberto also moved up the leaderboard on Tuesday, climbing from fourth to second. She missed individual medalist honors by one stroke.

The two biggest movers of the day for the Bearkats were Jenna Phillips and Tori Gatling. Phillips shot a 73 on Tuesday to move up 18 spots in the standings into a tie for 8th place. Gatling shot a team best 71, moving up 19 places to a tie for 12th.

“Tori Gatling was instrumental in helping the team with a 71,” Chain said. “Jenna Phillips was big as well shooting a 73 and Hanna Alberto continued with her consistency which has been a huge part of our success this season.”

On Monday, Alberto opened with a 70, which was the top score in the first round. The Kats were in sixth after the opening 36 holes following team scores of 305 and 313.

The Kats will be back in action on March 19-20 for the HBU Invitational at Blackhorse Golf Club in Cypress.
