MONTGOMERY – For the second straight year, women’s golfer Hannah Alberto took runner up honors at the Southland Conference Golf Championship Wednesday at Woodforest Golf Club.

Alberto helped the Bearkats to a third-place finish in the championship.

“I’m really proud of the girls,” said head coach Brandt Kieschnick. “This is such a tough golf course and you can be going along really well and then it just gets a little off and you can get behind the 8-ball.”

The Bearkats finished with a team score of 916 and were 18 shots behind tournament champions Houston Baptist.

Alberto had kept herself in contention all tournament, and got hot late in the day on Wednesday. She birdied four straight on the back 9 to get to 4-under for the round, and put her into the lead. But a triple bogey on 17 and a bogey on 18 put her two shots back of the leader.

“It was pretty amazing today, to get to 4-under on this course is impressive,” Kieschnick said. “She got a bad break there on 17 and struggled coming in. But to come from 4 or 5 shots behind and to put herself in contention, I’m just so proud of her.”

Alberto was joined in the top 10 by teammate Jenna Phillips, who finished the tournament at 13-over after a 77 on Wednesday. Phillips made the turn at 1-over for the round and was sititng on top of the leaderboard. But she dropped four strokes over the next three holes to drop out of contention.

“She will learn from this,” Kieschnick said. “She started the day four back and got to one after nine holes. She has already won this year and was able to put herself in contention. I’m proud of the way she competed.”
