McALLEN – With two rounds under 300, the women’s golf team is in position for another team title. They will take a 6-shot lead into the final round at the UTRGV Invitational.
After the opening round, the Kats trailed Texas State by two shots, but an 8-shot turnaround over the Bobcats in the second round set up SHSU with a lead heading into Tuesday’s final round.
“Today was a long day in the sun,” said coach Tommy Chain. “With the temperatures being near 90 it tested the patience of all the players in the field. We did a great job of staying focused throughout the 36 holes.”
Hanna Alberto, who jumped into the national rankings this week at No. 92, leads the way for the Kats at even par for the tournament after two rounds of 72. She is currently one shot back of the lead with one round left to play. Alberto had seven birdies on the day to lead the field.
Jenna Phillips as in a tie for 6th at 5-over par, and Kenlie Barrett is in 9th, one shot back. Leah Alberto gives the Kats four players in the top 12 after an 8-over day. She leads the fiels on Par 5 scoring, posting a 2-under. Tori Gatling rounds out the scoring for the Kats at 12-over and stands in 22nd.
“All the players did their part for this result,” Chain said. “Consistent ball-striking and some good putting helped to put a good number on the board."
