ARDMORE, Okla. – Jenna Phillips took the Individual title and the Bearkats took second as a team at the first event of the year, the Lady Maxwell Invitational hosted by Oral Roberts.
Phillips shot a final round 70 to edge out the medalist honors by just a stroke.
“Jenna was four shots back after 2 rounds and she told me she knew she would have to play a bogey-free round to have a chance to win individually,” coach Tommy Chain said. “She was almost able to accomplish that by making her one and only bogey on 17. With two birdies for the round that left her at the end with a one-under-par 70 on a tough scoring day as the scores went up a little. Jenna’s strength of consistent ball-striking is what put her in position to win.”
As a team, the Bearkats were the runners up shooting a 293 on the day moving past Troy. UTSA claimed the overall title.
Phillips was steady throughout the tournament, posting back-to-back 72’s to open the three-day event. Her 70 on Sunday was one of two rounds under par on the day in the 48 player field.
In addition to Phillips, Hanna Alberto also posted a top-10 finish, after a 76 on Sunday to close out a fourth-place performance on the weekend. Kenlie Barrett and Tori Gatling finished in 14thwhile Kari Bush was 39th.
“The team overall for three days have been very solid on the back nine which in my opinion is the tougher nine with great play on the back nine we were able to move into second place and also give UTSA a run for first place,” Chain said. “I was very pleased with the girls focus and they remained calm throughout the tournament.”
