HUNTSVILLE – The Sam Houston State Bearkats will put their talents on display on Thursday when they take part in the annual Spring Game at Bowers Stadium.
Coach K.C. Keeler’s team is currently in the midst of spring practice and will feature a balance of returners and newcomers in Thursday’s game, one which is set to get started at 7 p.m. on April 12 in conjunction with season tickets also going on sale. The contest will not follow typical format, rather it will pit the Bearkat Offense against the Bearkat Defense with a modified scoring system.
The offense will be able to score points via touchdowns, field goals, first downs, PATs and explosive plays. Meanwhile, the defense can put points on the board via turnovers, forcing three-and-out series, PATs, sacks, stops and defensive touchdowns.
The units will be put through a number of scenarios beginning deep in the offensive territory and progressing down the field throughout the evening. Group series leading up to midfield will make up the opening half of the game. Following halftime the team will take part in red zone, goal line and two-minute situations to close things out. Special teams scenarios will also be mixed in throughout.
The Bearkats are coming off a 12-2 season that saw them reach the semifinals of the FCS playoffs for the third time in four seasons under Keeler. Thursday’s game will feature 66 players who suited up in 2017.
The 2018 season is set to begin Sept. 8 when Sam Houston hosts Prairie View at Bowers Stadium.
