FRISCO – Following the Sam Houston State Bearkats’ 66-17 win over Nicholls on Saturday, sophomore wide receiver Nathan Stewart was named this week’s Southland Conference Offensive Player of the Week by league officials on Monday morning.
Stewart turned in a huge night in a statement win for the Bearkats over No. 23 Nicholls, the Kats’ second win over a ranked opponent this season. The sophomore standout hauled in 7 passes for 147 yards and a pair of scores against the Colonels in just over 2 quarters of work.
The first score came from 56 yards out on the second snap of the game and he added another 28-yard score late in the second quarter. It was his second consecutive game with over 100 yards receiving and the fifth time in his short career that he has surpassed the 100-yard mark.

His two touchdowns give him 15 touchdown receptions for his career in just 16 games played, a mark that already ranks in the career top 10 at Sam Houston.
The honor is the second of Stewart’s career, and already the fourth time a Bearkat has won a weekly honor from the league this year. The Dallas native was also named the SLC Offensive Player of the Week last season when he hauled in 12 catches for an SLC-record 268 yard receiving against McNeese.
Through three games this year Stewart is leading the SLC with 114.7 receiving yards per game. He and the rest of the No. 3 Bearkats will travel to Conway, Ark., this weekend for a prime showdown with No. 12 Central Arkansas at First Security Field at Estes Stadium on Saturday night on ESPN3.
