After more than a year of preparing and waiting, former Sam Houston State soccer player Megan Bennett is getting her chance to play professionally.

Last week Bennett signed a pro contract with Domsjö IF in Sweden and will begin training with them by the end of the week.

“It was a longer process than I expected, but I am ready to get started and get my first season under my belt,” said Bennett, who finished her playing career in 2016. “I knew I wanted to go to either Iceland or Sweden. I had a few other offers from a team in Australia, Iceland, and Israel but felt most confident starting my career in Sweden.”

Bennett, who was a four-year letter winner for the Bearkats, started 78 games playing as a defender.

“I am excited that Megan has earned this opportunity,” said head coach Tom Brown. “She has always been a student of the game and I think she can have a successful pro career.”

The season has already started for Domsjö IF. Their next match will be April 15 and the season will run until early October.

“I am so excited that my dream is finally becoming a reality, but for me this has always been the plan,” Bennett said. “I am ready to begin my professional career, and continue developing as a person and a player. This is only the beginning.

“I have pretty high expectations for the season. I am looking forward to making an impact, and taking my game to the next level. I also look forward to playing with a new group of girls and adapting to their style of play,” she said.
