HUNTSVILLE – Thanks to standout performances from seniors Lindsey Bienski and Christina Hendershot, the Sam Houston State soccer team (2-8-3, 1-3-2 SLC) earned its first Southland Conference victory in a 1-0 contest against Northwestern State, Friday evening at Pritchett Field.
Bienski got the Kats rolling early in the game after Meredith Carlson sent a textbook pass up the field. Making her way to the top-right corner of the 18-yard box, Bienski scorched her fourth goal of the season in the 6th minute to give the Kats an early 1-0 lead.
Northwestern State tried to even up the score one minute later but Hendershot found herself in perfect position to make the save. Carlson, Sammi Mayock and Courtney Pawlik were the other Kats to record shots on goal on the first half and Hendershot held steady making a total of three saves.
The NSU offense came out more aggressively in the second half and immediately put Hendershot to work. She recorded her fourth save of the match one minute into the second half and batted out a shot on an outstanding leaping attempt in the 55th minute.
Hendershot collected one more show-stopping save before finding herself in perfect position for her seventh and final save of the match in the 77th minute. Led by Pawlik and Whitney Woodward, the Bearkat defense stood tall and held the SLC leader in goals, April Trowbridge, silent through a full 90 minutes.
Earning its first win since the season opener, Sam Houston improves to 2-8-3 overall and 1-3-2 in SLC action.
