HUNTSVILLE - The Sam Houston State women’s soccer team could not crawl out of an early deficit in a 3-0 loss to Houston in the season opener Thursday evening at Pritchett Field.

The Bearkats (0-1) had eight shots in the game, but only two of those were on goal.

Senior Katy Johnson just missed getting Sam Houston State on the board in the 34th minute of the first half, but Houston goalkeeper Sammy Cude was able to save it. Freshman Brooke Jones also had a shot that was on target six minutes later, but again Cude made a save to spoil the threat.

The Cougars (1-0) scored three goals in the first 30 minutes of the game, the first by Kennedy Dahlin on an assist by Desiree Bowen at the 10:22 mark. Bowen got her own score 14 minutes later when she found the back of the net on a rebound off of a corner kick.

Houston scored again in the 29th minute with Bowen once again getting an assist on a cross to Morgan Goode.

Bearkats goalkeeper Abby DeLozier kept the Cougars off the board in the second half. She finished with three saves.
