The Sam Houston State women’s soccer team is on the road again this weekend when they travel to Louisiana and Southeast Texas for a pair of Southland Conference matches.
The Bearkats (4-5-1, 2-0-1 in SLC) are one of four teams still unbeaten in league play along with McNeese, Abilene Christian and Incarnate Word, which all sit at 3-0. Sam Houston State will try to hand the Cowgirls their first loss when the two teams meet in Lake Charles, Louisiana Friday at 7 p.m.
McNeese (7-3-0 overall) has played three close matches, like the Bearkats, in Southland action. The Cowgirls have three one-goal victories over Southeastern Louisiana (1-0), Central Arkansas (2-1 in overtime) and Northwestern State (2-1).
Sam Houston State knocked off UCA 3-2 in overtime thanks to a penalty kick goal by freshman Kalynn Bickford to begin SLC play on Sept. 20. The Bearkats then topped Houston Baptist 2-1 on a free-kick goal by Briana Woodall with less than a minute left in the match on Sept. 27 and battled Texas A&M-Corpus Christi to a 1-1 draw Sept. 29 with the lone goal coming from Sammi Mayock, who leads the Kats with three goals this season.
Sam Houston State will head to Beaumont Sunday to face Lamar at 1 p.m. The Cardinals (5-6-0 overall) are 2-1 in the Southland.
Lamar’s lone conference loss came 2-1 at Northwestern State. The Cardinals beat Nicholls 6-0 at home and won 3-2 on the road at Central Arkansas.
