Soccer starts league play 2-0 with win at Lamar

BEAUMONT - Midfielder Adriana Vasquez's first goal as a Bearkat provided the winning score for the Sam Houston women's soccer team in a 1-0 victory over Lamar Sunday afternoon.

The victory upped Sam Houston's season record to 4-5-2 for the season and puts the Bearkats atop the Southland Conference standings after the first weekend of league play with a 2-0 record.

Vasquez scored in the 55th minute when Cardinal goalkeeper Jennifer Gibbs fisted a long pass into the box into the cross bar. The ball bounced down and Vasquez poked it into the back of the net..

Lamar totaled 18 shots to Sam Houston's 10, but the Bearkats withstood the Cardinals' pressure for their fourth shutout of the season. Goalkeeper Jenny Pence made 10 saves.

Friday night, Sam Houston defeated McNeese State 2-1 in Lake Charles, LA, giving the Bearkats a 2-0 start in league play for the second year in a row.

"Picking up two victories on the road is huge," SHSU head coach Tom Brown said. "But we can't relax. We have to stay focused and continue to improve. We have two big home matches coming up this week and we need keep up our intensity."

Sam Houston returns home Friday and Sunday for Homecoming weekend matchups with Southeastern Louisiana Friday at 7 p.m. and Nicholls Sunday at 1 p.m., both at Pritchett Field.
