HUNTSVILLE – Sam Houston State’s Christina Hendershot has been named Southland Conference Goalkeeper of the Week following her stellar performance over the weekend, the league office announced on Tuesday.
The junior posted two clean sheets on the weekend, extending her scoreless streak to 235 minutes. She recorded five saves and faced a combined 18 shots between Nicholls and Southeastern Louisiana in a scoreless draw and 2-0 win, respectively.
“As she’s gone on with training, she has got better and better,” head coach Tom Brown said after Sunday’s match. “She put in a good performance this week. We’ve wanted someone who could really solidify that goalkeeping spot. I think this week went a lot way with that. Hopefully she’ll gain that confidence and keep those clean sheets coming.”
The College Station native has now allowed one or fewer goals in each of her last four starts. Hendershot has steadily lowered her goals against average down to 1.76 while boasting a .719 save percentage.
“It feels incredible but I have to give credit to my defense,” Hendershot said following the weekend. “They saved a couple for me including a few that may have gone in. Knowing we didn’t lose at home this weekend gave everyone some confidence. It gives everyone something to think on knowing we can win.”
Sam Houston will seek another strong performance in the net, hitting the road this weekend for matches at Abilene Christian on Friday (7 p.m.) and Incarnate Word on Sunday (11 a.m.). It will be the final road games for the Kats with the season finale one week from Sunday at Pritchett Field against SFA (6:30 p.m.).
