ABILENE– Sam Houston State visits Abilene Christian and UIW as part of the team’s final regular season road trip, looking to capitalize on a chance to lock up a spot in the Southland Conference Tournament.
With three league matches remaining and eight teams qualifying for the event, the Bearkats are tied for seventh in the conference standings at 10 points with A&M-Corpus Christi. Sam Houston is three points up on current ninth-place Nicholls and five ahead of Southeastern Louisiana.
The squad picked up four points last weekend highlighted by a 2-0 victory against Southeastern. Thanks to its strong back line and stellar performance in the net, Christina Hendershot was named the league’s goalkeeper of the week on Tuesday after posting a pair of clean sheets.
Sam Houston’s 0.97 goals against average in league games ranks fourth in the conference while Hendershot is third individually in the category at 0.77. In overall games, Sam Houston boasts two of the league’s top nine scorers in Carlota Suarez Crespo and Beryl Smith who have six goals each.
The Kats are searching for their first win against ACU. The teams have met four times with the Wildcats owning a 3-0-1 advantage since the two began playing in 2013. Meanwhile, Sam Houston carries a 3-1-0 lead in the series against UIW but is looking to avenge a 4-1 loss a season ago.
Head coach Tom Brown on the weekend ahead…
“We are looking for wins this weekend to secure a spot in the conference tournament. However, we will be focused on how we play. I feel that when we can control the ball and keep it moving, we are a much better team.”
Head coach Tom Brown on overcoming last Friday’s scoreless tie to get the Sunday win…
“We did a better job of moving the ball throughout the team and switching the point of attack. Defensively, we limited our opponents’ quality chances. We need to make sure that we have the leadership on the field to keep us following our game model and not get caught up in how the other team is playing.”
Head coach Tom Brown on facing Abilene Christian and UIW…
“Both teams defeated us last year and I am sure they will play well at home. We are very close to Abilene Christian in the standings and this game can help both teams secure spots in the conference tournament and solidify seeding’s.”
