CHICAGO - The Sam Houston State women’s soccer team could not find a way to break through against a stout Illinois-Chicago defense in a 1-0 loss on the road Thursday afternoon.
The Bearkats (1-5-0) had their best chance to tie the game in the closing seconds, but junior Courtney Pawlik’s shot was saved by Flames goalkeeper Lena Kurz as the clocked expired. It was Sam Houston State’s only shot on goal in the contest.
UIC (3-2-1) broke the scoreless tie in the 82nd minute when Emma Main scored her second goal of the season in the far post off a cross by Grace Haines.
Freshman goalkeeper Tatum Krueger turned in a solid outing for the Bearkats, who also played well defensively. She finished with four saves, two in the first half and two more in the second.
Sam Houston State managed just three other shots, two were blocked and one missed high over the crossbar.
The Bearkats will travel to Prairie View A&M Sunday for a 1 p.m. match. Sam Houston State is 11-0 all-time versus the Panthers with the last win coming 4-0 at Prairie View in 2015.
Prairie View (1-4) defeated fellow Southland Conference opponent Nicholls 2-1 on Sept. 8. The Panthers host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Friday.
