HUNTSVILLE - The Sam Houston State women’s soccer team once again rallied from behind to avoid a loss but couldn’t catch a break on some good looks at the goal in a 1-1 draw with Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Sunday afternoon at Pritchett Field.
The Bearkats (4-5-1) remain unbeaten in Southland Conference play at 2-0-1. The Islanders (4-5-1) move to 1-1-1 in league action.
Junior Sammi Mayock scored her third goal of the season at the opportune time with Sam Houston State trailing 1-0 in the second half.
Freshman Brooke Jones played the cross into the box, and freshman Alyssa Austin, who just missed scoring her first goal of the season on a one-on-one with Islander goalkeeper Kyleigh Hall in the first half, headed it to Mayock. Mayock swirled and drilled the ball past Hall into the back center of the net in the 79th minute.
The Bearkats have come from behind in all three of their Southland Conference matches, the other two resulting in wins over Central Arkansas and Houston Baptist.
Neither team was able to generate much offense in the first overtime. With just over a minute to go in the second extra period, Mayock had a shot at a goal off a header but couldn’t get much power behind it to get it past Hall, who had seven saves.
Sophomore goalkeeper Abby DeLozier had a solid day in the net for Sam Houston State with five saves. The lone goal she gave up came in the 36th minute when she was knocked to the turf in a scrum for the ball on a cross into the box.
The Bearkats hit the road for the next three matches, beginning with a contest at McNeese Friday in Lake Charles, Louisiana at 7 p.m.
