NATCHITOCHES, La. - The Sam Houston State women’s soccer team battled Northwestern State to the final seconds but couldn’t break through offensively in a 1-0 Southland Conference loss on the road Friday evening.

The Bearkats (4-7-1 overall, 2-2-1 in SLC) only managed four shots, two on goal by senior Katy Johnson and sophomore Grace Stine, against the Lady Demons (7-6-1, 4-1-1).

Northwestern State broke the scoreless tie with a goal in the second half. Norma Trejo scored the game-winner in the 47th minute off the assist by Samantha Hanking. The Lady Demons had 10 shots and six of those were on goal.

Sam Houston State freshman goalkeeper Tatum Krueger saved five shots.

The Bearkats have one more match in Louisiana this weekend when they travel to Lake Charles to face McNeese Sunday at 1 p.m. The match was originally scheduled for Oct. 4, but inclement weather in the area forced the match to be postponed.

McNeese State (9-3-0 overall) has won seven straight matches after beating Nicholls 5-1 Friday night and is currently in first place in the Southland Conference at 5-0-0.
