HUNTSVILLE - After a strong showing by the men and women’s track and field team in College Station to start the season the Bearkats will travel to Houston to participate in the Fast Track Invitational and Multi this weekend.
Sam Houston will have athletes looking to ride momentum following a record-breaking showing for the team.
Senior sprinter Chris Jefferson will be aiming at another strong performance following his showing in the Ted Nelson Invitational, a showing in which he was joined by fellow teammate and freshmen Jo’Vaughn Martin in setting a school record in the 200-meter event.
Jefferson’s strong work earned him Southland Conference athlete of the week honors. He stands as the fastest 60-meter runner and fastest 200-meter runner followed by Martin in the NCAA.
Both athletes were not alone in setting records for the school. Fabian McCall is coming off of his own record setting performance in the 60-meter hurdles. The junior is first in the NCAA in the event after the first week of the season.
For field events the Bearkats also hold top spots with senior Aaron Akens and junior Joshua Hernandez holding the first and second spot for the weight throw.
The relay for both men and the women’s side got off to a good start with the men finishing first and the women finishing third respectively. The men will look to replicate success and the women will look to inch up in their NCAA rankings.
For the women, freshman Payton Wells stands as the top runner in the 400-meter event in the NCAA. She is joined by sophomore Jasmine Mitchell whose time has her placed at the third spot.
The women also hold the top spot in the 60-meter hurdles with junior Baylee Lara as the top finisher in the event for her team.
The Fast Track Invitational and Multi will take place from Jan 19-20 in Houston.
