Houston Alumni Invitational

 

HOUSTON – The SHSU track and field team had several top finishes and a couple of event wins during the Houston Alumni Invitational on Saturday from the Tom Tellez Track.

 

The men’s team collected a total of 100 points, good for second overall, and the women placed third with 97 points at the Houston Invitational.

 

In the field events for the men’s side, Joshua Hamilton recorded a personal record in the triple jump. The sophomore placed third with a throw of 14.89m collecting six points.

 

Frequent top performer in field events Aaron Akens competed in the hammer throw and the discus throw. He placed in the top three in the hammer throw and came away the event winner in the discus throw. Michael Nichols recorded his best throw of the season in the discus throw with a mark of 47.18m. Nichols also collected eight points in the shot put where he topped out at 17.19m.

 

For the men’s running events Fabian McCall won the 110m hurdles with a time of 14.08. Freshman David Zavalla placed No. 3 in the 3000m steeplechase collecting six points and posted a time of 10:40.74.

 

For the women’s field events SHSU saw three personal records set and one event winner.

 

Junior Cameron Boedeker took first place in the pole vault collecting the maximum 10 points for Sam Houston with a topped-out mark of 3.70m.

 

Senior Lauryn Caldwell set personal records in the shot put and the discus throw. Her personal record in the discus throw was good for the No. 2 spot with a throw of 49.73m, while she topped out at 14.48m, good for fourth. Halie Daniel rounded out the Bearkats that set a personal record during the meet. Daniel recorded a mark of 16.00m in the shot put and, placing second.

 

The Bearkats also had select athletes compete in the heptathlon and decathlon during the Carl Kight Invitational in Nacogdoches.

 

NACOGDOCHES – Alie Angelo finished the first day of competition in the heptathlon in fifth and finished the competition in 6th with a total score of 4496. Angelo accumulated 2859 points after the first day. She recorded 870 from her hurdle time (14.79), 655 in the high jump (1.53m), 569 in the shot put (10.60m) and 765 in the 200-meter dash (26.37). She collected 628 points on the final day, competing in the long jump, javelin throw, and 800-meter race.

 

Cade Skuza and Tanner Day represented the Bearkats in the decathlon. Skuza collected 5825 total points and finished in the No. 5 spot after he finished the first day in the No. 7 spot. Day collected 5809 points and moved from No. 8 on day one to No. 6 on the final day.

 

The track and field team will travel to College Station to compete in the Aggie Alumni Muster form Apr 12-13.
