FRISCO – The Sam Houston State Bearkats continued their strong run to open the indoor season on Wednesday as Ashton Summers and Camry Grigsby were each named Southland Conference Athletes of the Week in an announcement from league officials.
It is the first such honor for each this season and gives the Kats four weekly honors from the league in just three weeks of competition in 2018.
Each was in attendance at the Texas Tech Open over the weekend in Lubbock with Summers winning the pole vault competition. His fault of 17-4.25 feet was tops among all competitors and is the best of any vaulter in the SLC this year.
In the women’s 800-meter run, Grigsby took the top spot, turning in a time of 2:12.15 for the win, edging Arkansas freshman Ruth Wiggins by nearly a full second to do so. Grigsby was also part of the women’s 4x400 relay team along with Teona Spivey, Kenaysia Dixon and Kodii Church that was nearly six seconds quicker than the rest of the field in claiming the event crown with a time of 3:47.46.
The Bearkats will split their squads up this weekend, sending athletes to both the Howie Ryan Invitational in Houston and the Don Kirby Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M. It will be the final tune-up of the indoor season before the Kats head to Birmingham, Ala., for the Southland Conference Indoor Championships beginning Feb. 21.
