Memorable First Half: Kats close record-breaking first half with No. 2 ranking

HUNTSVILLE – For the sixth time in the last seven years, the Sam Houston women's bowling team was selected to participate in the NCAA Championships. This past spring, the Bearkats were one of eight teams announced to the field as the No. 4 overall seed in the tournament.

After three days of competition, the Kats reached the National Semifinals before falling to eventual national champion McKendree. Trailing the top-seed three games to one, Sam Houston fought back. The Kats, using a lineup that included two freshmen and a sophomore, took games five and six, to force a decisive game 7.

Despite some early misses, the Bearkats pushed McKendree to the 10th frame before falling short.

“I think we have the kind of team that doesn't quit,” said junior Heather Penatzer following the loss. “We knew we were capable of getting on a roll and we just wanted to keep putting pressure on them.”
