WACO – The Sam Houston State Bearkats split a pair of games on Saturday at the Getterman Classic, coming back to walk off with a win over UT Arlington before falling to No. 16 Baylor at Getterman Stadium.

The Kats (3-4) trailed 3-0 to UT Arlington in the days opener before coming back to tie things up in the sixth, winning it in walk-off fashion on a single by Tiffany Thompson. Things did not go as well in the nightcap as the Kats gave up five early runs and registered just one hit against the nation’s 16th-ranked club.

Game 1

Sam Houston State 4, UT Arlington 3 (Box Score)

Sam Houston pounded out 11 hits – six in the final two innings – and got a walk off single from Tiffany Thompson to complete a comeback and give the Bearkats a 4-3 win over the Lady Mavs.

The RBI single capped a great game from Thompson who also had a pair of doubles and two runs scored. Megan McDonald also had three hits and a run scored, while Sheridan Fisher had two hits and a run.

Cleanup hitter Brooke Malia was the benefactor of the success of the top third of the order, adding two more RBI to her total for the season with a sacrifice fly and a game-tying RBI double that scored Thompson in the bottom of the sixth. Kyndal Kutac also had an RBI single.

The comeback made a winner of Karina Sanchez who allowed just one hit in 2.0 scoreless frames, taking over for Regan Dunn who lasted 5.0 innings.

UT Arlington got a run in the first and two more in the second before Dunn settled in and put up three consecutive zeros before handing it over to Sanchez. That gave the Bearkat offense the chance to come back, which it began with an RBI apiece from Malia and Kutac in the fourth that cut the lead to 3-2.

Thompson and Malia then led off the sixth with consecutive two-baggers, the second scoring Thompson to tie it up. Sam Houston had a chance to take the lead in the inning with the go-ahead runner at third base and just one out, but was unable to cash in.

The Kats then completed the comeback in the seventh, setting the table with consecutive singles by McDonald and Fisher with one out. Thompson then delivered the game-winning single to center field, scoring McDonald to walk it off.

Game 2

No. 16 Baylor 7, Sam Houston State 0 (Box Score)

The Bearkats fell behind 5-0 in the first two innings and never could claw their way back in the second game of the day as the Bears got a strong outing from Sidney Holman to hand the Kats a 7-0 defeat.

Baylor scored three times in the first and two more times in the second, taking advantage of a pair of SHSU errors on their way to a 10-hit day as a team. That was more than enough for Holman, who allowed just one hit in 6.0 innings with three strikeouts and a pair of walks to move to 3-1 on the year.

Darby Fitzpatrick took the loss in her first appearance of the season, walking three and striking out one with four runs allowed in working into the second inning. Sanchez took over from there and allowed three runs – all unearned – in 5.0 innings of relief.

Bailey White had the lone Bearkat hit with a single in the fifth. McDonald and Fisher were the only other Kats to reach base, each earning a walk from Holman.
