HUNTSVILLE – With wins in each of its last five games, the Sam Houston State Bearkats will look to stay hot this weekend when they head to Lake Charles to take on preseason league favorite McNeese in a three-game set at Cowgirl Diamond.
Game 1 of the series is set to begin at 6 p.m. on Friday. The teams will wrap up the series with a Saturday doubleheader set to begin at noon. Fans can watch live and follow live stats at McNeeseSports.com, and get updates as they happen by following @BearkatsSB on Twitter.
The Cowgirls got off to an equally good start to league play last weekend, sweeping Central Arkansas at home. They have also won 10 of their last 11 games with the lone loss in that span coming on March 4 to Oregon State.
But the Kats come in sporting one of the top offenses in the Southland, leading the league with a .304 batting average, while ranking third with a .419 slugging percentage. Much of that has been a credit to the Kaitlynn Dawson and Tori Koerselman, who rank third and fourth in the league in batting average. Dawson has been particularly on fire of late, getting multiple hits in each of her last three games to raise her average to .412 for the year, while her .706 slugging percentage is second best in the Southland.
Sam Houston has gotten plenty of solid work in the circle as well, with Tayler Atkinson’s 2.26 ERA and five wins each ranking in the top five in the league. Meanwhile, Lindsey McLeod has picked up a win and two saves in her last three appearances, while her .204 opponent’s average is second best in the league.
SERIES vs McNEESE
Sam Houston is 61-64-1 all-time against the Cowgirls with McNeese sweeping the Kats each of the last two years, including winning eight of the last nine overall.
