HUNTSVILLE – The Sam Houston State Bearkat softball team will try to maintain its recent stretch of momentum on Tuesday when they host Marist for a doubleheader at the Bearkat Softball Complex.
Coach Bob Brock’s squad has reeled off victories in six of their last eight games, only falling on the road at No. 25 Mississippi State in that stretch. That includes a dominating sweep of UIW over the weekend to kick off Southland Conference play, outscoring the Cardinals 19-2 during that series.
The Kats were one of five teams to pick up three-game sweeps in the league’s opening weekend of play, including Central Arkansas who swept league-favorite McNeese, the Bearkats’ next opponent following Tuesday against the Red Foxes.
Sam Houston crushed three home runs in a run-rule victory in the series finale over UIW on Saturday, including a pair from Tiffany Thompson in what was her first game of her career with multiple home runs. But it was the Bearkat pitching staff who truly shined over the weekend.
Junior Lindsey McLeod struck out 24 hitters in 12.0 innings over two games, including 14 in the series opener to tie the SHSU single-game record. She currently leads the SLC with 89 strikeouts, 14 more than the next closest in the league, and is also third in ERA (1.68) and first in opponent’s batting average (.183).
The Kats also got a great outing in the middle game from sophomore Katilynn Dawson as she punched out eight in a complete-game effort for her first win of the season.
Meanwhile, Marist comes to Huntsville on a return trip to the east coast from a swing in San Luis Obispo, Calif., where they dropped three of five games to both Cal Poly and Santa Clara at the Shareslo Mustang Classic.
