HUNTSVILLE- Sam Houston State battled in two tight games, splitting a doubleheader against Marist at Bearkat Softball Complex on Tuesday afternoon.
The Bearkats responded to a solo home run in the top of the first inning by Marist (7-10) with two runs of their own in the bottom of the inning of Game 1. After back-to-back reached bases by way of double and single, Codi Carpenter blasted a two-RBI single into deep left field. The Red Foxes would add another run in the fourth, but the Kats used an error to send the winning run home in the fifth.
Sam Houston held a slight 1-0 lead most of the back end of the doubleheader until Marist rallied late to score in three consecutive innings to put it out of reach 6-2.
The Bearkats return home to face off against reigning Southland Conference champion McNeese in a three-game series starting on Friday at 5:00 p.m. at the Bearkat Softball Complex.
Game 1 – Box Score
Sam Houston 3, Marist 2
The Bearkats used eight hits and a timely Marist error to push out the 3-2 win Tuesday to begin the doubleheader over the Red Foxes.
Marist fired first with a two out solo homer over left field wall in the first, but Sam Houston would respond in the bottom half of the inning with a pair of hits followed before a Carpenter two-RBI single into left field giving the Kats a 2-1 lead.
Lindsey McLeod improved to 7-4 with the win, allowing two runs on six hits in 7.0 innings of work fanning five Red Foxes while only walking a single batter. Kallen Leeseberg moved to 1-4 for the Red Foxes, tossing all seven frames and allowing three runs on eight hits with one strikeout.
A RBI single in the fourth by Madison Lee helped knot the score up at 2-2 before the Kats would use a key error in the bottom of the fifth that would send the winning runner home. Sheridan Fisher orchestrated one of her two hits to get on and moved to third by way of wild pitch and single, then an error from the Marist shortstop put Fisher home for the win.
Game 2 – Box Score
Marist 6, Sam Houston 2
The Red Foxes facilitated six runs in the final three innings to win 6-2 over the Bearkats in the bottom half of the doubleheader.
The Bearkats answered first with back-to-back singles putting runners in scoring position where Bailey White used a sacrifice fly to cross the leading runner at home with early 1-0 lead.
The next three frames would be scoreless, but Marist used their own sacrifice fly to tie up the game thanks to the leadoff runner doubling and moving to third on a ground out.
That is when the Red Foxes broke open the game with a three-run homer from Gabrielle Kelliher into left field on a 0-2 pitch. They woudl add two more runs in the top of the seventh, with the only Bearkat answer coming in the form of a Tiffany Thompson solo homer in the bottom of the seventh.
Annie Bailey took the loss in the circle for the Kats as she allowed two hits and three runs in just 0.2 innings while striking out only one. Darby Fitzpatrick got the start, pitching for 4.2 innings and fanning three while allowing one run on six hits before handing off to Bailey.
