HUNTSVILLE – Sam Houston State softball head coach Garrett Valis has made the first additions of his coaching, adding three players for the 2019 season this week, including a pair of pitchers.

Joining the Bearkats are pitchers Karina Sanchez (Del Valle, Texas / Temple College) and Regan Dunn (Cuero, Texas / Cuero HS), along with infielder Rylee Hazlewood (Montgomery, Texas / Montgomery HS).

“All three of these kids are high-character and high-academic level kids,” Valis said. “They are all going to fit into our system and the culture that we are trying to develop in our program very well.”

Regan Dunn • P/UTL • L/R • 5-5 • Cuero, Texas • Cuero HS
Dunn comes in after a prep career at Cuero High School that saw her earn her fair share of accolades as well. Most recently she led the Gobblers to a 27-9 record and the Region IV-4A finals.

The salutatorian of her senior class, Dunn finished with over 800 strikeouts in her prep career and an ERA of just 1.06 in the circle, while striking out more than 300 hitters in each of the past two years. A dual threat, she also hit .541 with 59 hits and 45 runs scored as a senior.

Among her accolades include being named the District MVP both as a sophomore and junior and the district’s Newcomer of the Year as a freshman. She was first team all-district each of her first three seasons in addition to being named all-state twice, and likely a third time upon announcement of this year’s postseason teams.

Valis on Dunn
“Adding Regan is a tremendous addition for us. She is a great athlete who pitches and hits from the left side. We think she is going to have an immediate impact for us both pitching and offensively.”

Rylee Hazlewood • 3B/UTL • R/R • 5-7 • Montgomery, Texas • Montgomery HS
Hazlewood has racked up plenty of honors of her own during her time at MHS, where she played two years with current Bearkat shortstop Tiffany Thompson.

She was named the teams’ MVP as a senior on her way to earning all-district first team honors. Additionally, she was named to the all-district second team both as a sophomore and junior while getting an honorable mention nod as a freshman.

Hazlewood also made the academic all-district team each of her final three years.

Valis on Hazlewood
“She is going to add immediate depth for us on the infield and the corners. We see her as someone who we can get into our program and continue to improve year by year with the chance to turn into a contributor."

Karina Sanchez • P • R/R • 6-0 • Del Valle, Texas • Del Valle HS • Temple College  The Kats added an experienced pitcher to its ranks with the addition of Sanchez, a right-hander who spent the past two seasons at Temple College.

While there, she left her mark, leading the Lady Leopards to a 47-8 record and the 2018 NJCAA national title, earning tournament MVP honors along the way. She allowed just one run on three hits and struck out seven hitters in 5.0 innings of the championship game, earning the win over Chipola College.

For the season she logged 152 innings, striking out 168 hitters while also posting a 1.42 ERA and a 20-3 overall record. Twice she was named the Region X pitcher of the week in 2018 before eventually being named a first team all-conference selection and leading TC to a conference, regional and eventually national title.

Prior to Temple, Sanchez played at Del Valle High School where she was the district’s Newcomer of the Year as a freshman and honorable mention all-district honors as a sophomore. She followed that up with first team all-district nods as both a junior and senior in addition to academic all-district honors all four years at DVHS.

Valis on Sanchez
“We are excited about her after she pitched so well at the college level. She has improved every year that I’ve seen her over the past five years. She’s going to bring a lot of experience to the circle and get a lot of groundballs for us.”
