Not only did the Sam Houston softball team enjoy success on the field, they excelled off it as well.
With the release of the Southland Conference All-Academic softball team, the Bearkats placed a league-best four players on the two recognized teams, including a first-team selection for Lindsey McLeod.
“I am extremely proud for these young ladies and for our program to be recognized with four athletes on the SLC All-Academic team,” said head coach Garret Valis. “It’s a testament to their commitment to be well rounded student-athletes and this type of effort is why our roster carried a team GPA of 3.63 this past year. It is great work that we will continue to emphasize and celebrate within Bearkat softball.”
McLeod is a two-time selection and this year was also named a Google Cloud All-District selection as well as claiming Google Cloud All-America honors. The senior from Austin posted a 4.0 GPA majoring in public health. She finished the season with 15 wins and a pair of saves, holding opponents to just a .204 average while posting a 2.34 ERA in 197.1 innings pitched.
White, a freshman from Burleson, had a 3.94 GPA in general business. On the field she clubbed seven doubles and five homers, while her 27 RBIs were second on the team.
Thompson, a sophomore from Montgomery, recorded a 3.78 GPA in public health. She hit .301 and led the team both with eight home runs and a .536 slugging percentage, and was nearly perfect on the base paths with 19 successful steals in 20 tries.
Andrie, a senior from China Spring, had a near perfect 3.97 GPA while majoring in finance. She hit two home runs this year and drove in 13, while scoring 12 runs of her own.
The All-Academic teams are voted on by head coaches, sports information directors and academic/compliance staff members from each Southland Conference institution. Student-athletes must possess a 3.0 cumulative GPA, have completed one full academic year at the nominating institution and participated in at least 50 percent of the team’s competition to qualify for All-Academic selection, excluding pitchers. Nominees who were also named to the All-Conference First Team or CoSIDA Academic All-District team are automatically named Southland All-Academic.
The Southland Conference awards committee, which consists of one administrator from each of the 13 member schools, votes for the student-athlete of the year. The Southland Student-Athlete of the Year award is presented to one student-athlete who achieves excellence in both academics and athletics. All nominees must have earned at least a 3.2 GPA on a 4.0 scale and demonstrated athletics achievement for at least two years at the nominating institution.
