FRISCO – Senior pitcher Lindsey McLeod has been named the Southland Conference Pitcher of the Week, per a release by league officials on Tuesday afternoon.
It is the first time this season she has claimed the honor and the fourth time in her career.
McLeod was in midseason form over the weekend, helping the Bearkats to a 3-1 record at the Blues City Classic. The senior from Austin picked up the win in both games she pitched in, and did it in dominant fashion. In the two games she struck out 18 and walked just one in 11.2 frames, allowing just two hits and throwing only 137 pitches in total.
The highlight of the weekend came in the tournament opener when she threw the first Bearkat perfect game since 2009 against UT Martin. McLeod needed just 63 pitches to retire 15 hitters in 5.0 innings of work - 10 of which came via strikeout. It was her 14th career game with 10+ strikeouts and she had at least two punchouts in four of the game’s five frames.
One day later she entered with two outs in the third inning and proceeded to pitch 6.2 scoreless innings, giving the Bearkat offense the chance to stage a comeback that ended in a 4-3 win in nine innings over Loyola-Chicago.
That day she struck out eight more hitters, with her weekend total giving her 507 for her career, leaving McLeod just 21 strikeouts shy of tying the SHSU career strikeouts record.
She and the rest of the Bearkats will now be back in Huntsville this weekend to open up Southland Conference play vs Northwestern State. The teams will play a doubleheader at the Bearkat Softball Complex on Friday before completing the series with a noon game on Saturday.
