HUNTSVILLE – The Sam Houston State softball team exploded for seven runs in the second inning to clinch a berth in the Southland Conference Tournament with an 8-0 victory over Abilene Christian in five innings at Bearkat Softball Complex Saturday.

The Bearkats (23-19 overall, 14-4 in SLC) will be part of the tournament’s eight-team field, which will be held May 7-11 in Natchitoches, Louisiana, after sweeping the Wildcats (9-26, 2-16).

Senior ace Lindsey McLeod (14-7) continued her dominance in the circle. She stretched her scoreless innings streak to 25 with five more coming Saturday as Sam Houston extended its winning streak to seven straight games. She gave up one hit and finished with eight strikeouts.

Sophomore Brooke Malia led Sam Houston State at the plate by blasting a pair of home runs. She broke the game open in the second with a three-run blast to left and she launched a solo shot, her eighth of the season, to center to put the run rule into effect.

The Bearkats jumped on ACU in the second inning. Junior Megan McDonald had an RBI single, and junior Tiffany Thompson drove in two more runs with a double to center field to make it 4-0. The first run of the inning came courtesy of two Wildcat errors and a single by sophomore Sheridan Fisher.

The Bearkats hit the road for the next eight contests before finishing the regular season with a three-game series against Stephen F. Austin in Huntsville. Sam Houston travels to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi next weekend. The Bearkats will battle the Islanders in a doubleheader Friday beginning at 1 p.m. and conclude the series Saturday at 11 a.m.
