HUNTSVILLE – The Sam Houston State Bearkats ran their winning streak to five in a row with a dominating showing in two run-rule wins over Prairie View on Wednesday at the Bearkat Softball Complex.
The Kats (7-8) pushed across nine runs in the first three innings of the opener and had two big innings in the nightcap, finishing both games in just five innings. Sam Houston is now 3-0 against the Panthers (1-11) this season after also recording a win in the ULM Mardi Gras Classic in the season’s opening weekend.
Game 1 – Box Score
Sam Houston 9, Prairie View 0 (5 innings)
The Bearkats did all their damage in the first three innings, striking for four runs in the first inning and adding on five more in a 9-0 win in just five innings of Game 1 of the doubleheader.
Tayler Atkinson worked out of trouble in the opening inning and then allowed just two hits the rest of the way in earning her second win of the year. Meanwhile, the Bearkat offense pounded out nine hits in just five frames and took advantage of five walks and two errors by Prairie View.
Prairie View threatened early in the game thanks to a Bearkat error and a pair of infield singles, but Atkinson was able to work out of it. She coaxed a bases-loaded fielder’s choice before striking out Kelsey Coronado and then getting Alyssa Garcia to ground out harmlessly to shortstop.
Megan Crosby got the Kats going in the bottom half of the inning with a single and two batters later Kaitlynn Dawson got a single of her own to put the Kats in business with two outs. Sam Houston then caught a break on an error by Panther third baseman Kylar Ward-Flowers that scored Crosby to put the Bearkats in front. Tiffany Thompson then upped the lead to 2-0 with an RBI single to left and one batter later Katie Andrie capped the scoring when she took the first pitch she saw into the left-center field gap that plated both Thompson and Ashley Goetz for a 4-0 lead after an inning of play.
Sam Houston tacked on three more an inning later, sending nine hitters to the plate. A one-out walk to Tori Koerselman started it off, and after stealing second, she came in to score on an RBI triple by Crosby. Codi Carpenter followed Crosby with an RBI double of her own, chasing Prairie View starter Taylor Drury from the circle. But reliever Kellady Johnson did not have much better luck, walking and hitting the first two hitters she saw before surrendering another run on Thompson’s second RBI single of the game.
Consecutive one-out walks to Casey Kauder and Emily Bounds put the Beakats quickly back in business in the third, and after a single from Carpenter loaded the bases, pinch hitter Hannah Marino picked up an RBI with a four-pitch walk. One batter later, Ashley Goetz made it 9-0 with a sacrifice fly to deep center field.
PLAYERS OF THE GAME
Three Bearkats finished with multiple hits in the game, including Thompson who had a pair of RBI singles. Codi Carpenter also had two hits and an RBI, while Megan Crosby had a single and an RBI triple.
Atkinson picked up her second win of the season with 5.0 shutout innings, punching out five while allowing just three hits.
Game 2 – Box Score
Sam Houston 11, Prairie View 0 (5 innings)
Jordan Franks held Prairie View scoreless for 5.0 innings and the Bearkats needed just two big innings to blow past Prairie View for a second time on the day, 11-0, in just five innings.
The game saw the Kats put up a dozen hits in just four trips to the plate, with half of them going for extra bases. Three of those hits were triples, marking just the third time in Sam Houston history the team has had three triples in a single game.
Thompson was one of two Bearkats to homer in a six-run fourth inning and finished with four RBI for the day and was one of four Kats with at least two RBI.
The Bearkats continued their theme of big innings in the second, pushing across five runs on six hits. A leadoff single from Dawson opened the inning and two batters later Thompson got one to the wall for a triple to score Dawson and get the Kats on the board.
Katie Andrie followed by taking a 3-1 pitch back up the middle for her third RBI of the day and after a single from Samantha Belongia, McDonald ripped the first of her two triples to plate a pair and put Sam Houston up 4-0. Koerselman then capped the inning by legging out a double to center field.
After Franks kept the Panthers off the board for two more innings, the Bearkats put the run-rule in effect once again with a six-run fourth. McDonald’s second triple came with one out, igniting the frame. She scored two pitches later when Koerselman ripped a hard grounder for an infield single off of the Panther pitcher. Crosby then blasted a laser over the left-field fence for her third homer of the season, a two-run shot that upped the advantage to 8-0.
A single from Carpenter and a two-out error then got something going again for Sam Houston with two outs and Thompson finished off her big day with a three-run bomb to left field for her first career homer.
PLAYER OF THE GAME
Thompson hit safely in two of her three at-bats, driving in runs with both of her hits and finishing with four RBI for the game and six for the doubleheader. McDonald, meanwhile, was one of four Kats with multiple RBI and became just the third player in program history to have multiple triples in a single game.
Sam Houston will hit the road once again for its final non-conference weekend of the year when it heads to the Houston Hilton Plaza Classic. The Kats will open up the weekend on Friday with a pair of games against Wisconsin and Houston before facing Princeton and ULM on Saturday. The weekend will conclude with a Sunday matinee against Houston.
