LAFAYETTE, La. – Sam Houston State shot 10-over, 586, during its opening two rounds of the 32nd Annual Louisiana Classics on Monday, and will enter Tuesday’s final 18 holes in fifth, from the par-72, 6,898-yard Oakbourne Country Club.
The Bearkats are led by Noah Steele, who posted a pair of 70s on Monday. The freshman enters Tuesday in a three-way tie for fifth at 4-under, 140. Steele is also joined by Jake McCrory (72-73 – 145) inside the top-20. The junior is 18th at 1-over.
Meanwhile, Steele’s back-to-back 70s mark the best rounds for the Kingston, Ontario, Canada, product in four tournaments this season. Steele, who shot 3-under on the course’s par-4s, is just four strokes back of the lead, currently held by Kent State’s Ian Holt (8-under, 136).
Twenty-second ranked Kent State paces team play at 15-under, 561, followed by No. 14 LSU at 9-under, 567. The Bearkats, who also trail No. 13 Texas A&M (1-under, 575) and No. 3 Illinois (even-par, 576), are one stroke up on host Louisiana (11-over, 587) and nine strokes ahead of seventh-place Southern Miss (16-over, 595).
Sam Houston’s William Holcomb (73-76 – 149) climbed as high as 24th and currently sits in a three-way tie for 33rd at 5-over. Elsewhere, Andrew Ertel (76-77 – 153) and Jesse Massengale (77-76 -- 153) are locked in a five-way tie for 54th at 9-over.
Final-round action begins Tuesday at 7:30 a.m. with playing starting off holes 1 and 10. Massengale will tee off No. 1 at 8:10 a.m. followed by Ertel at 8:18 a.m. and Holcomb at 8:26 a.m. McCrory will tee off at 8:34 a.m. and Steele, whose previous best finish was 41st at the Hartford Hawk Invitational, gets underway at 8:34 a.m.
