WILLIAMBURG, Va. – Sam Houston State captured fifth at the three-day Kingsmill Intercollegiate at 24-over, 864, led by a fifth-place finish from Andrew Ertel from the par-70, 6,778-yard Kingsmill Resort.

Tennessee secured the team championship, firing a 10-under, 850, while the individual title belonged to a trio of golfers including Penn State’s Cole Miller and Ryan Domes who joined the Volunteers’ Clark Robinson at 1-under, 209.

Meanwhile, for the Ertel (69-73-69), the top-five finisher was his third of the season and best result taking a tie for second at the Warrior Princeville Makai Invitational from Oct. 30 – Nov. 1. The three-round score was the senior’s lowest of the season.

Freshman Noah Steele finished in a five-way tie for 20th, firing a final-round 1-under, 69 to move up the leaderboard. The Kingston, ON Canada product finished at 7-over, 217, carding an opening-round 73 and second-round 75.

Teammate Jesse Massengale carded a 10-over, 220, in an 11-way tie for 30th. The redshirt sophomore shot 74-76-70, recording his second top-20 finish in four outings, and was joined by Jake McCrory, who also finished tied for 30th.

The finish was the best for McCrory (74-71-75) since taking third at the Hartford Hawk Invitational from Sept. 19 – Sept. 20 and marked his second top-25 finisher in three tournaments.

Sam Houston’s William Holcomb rounded out competition for the Kats, finishing tied for 47th at 13-over, 223. The freshman (76-73-73) was making his fifth consecutive start in the top-five.

The squad returns to action two weeks from Monday at the Jim West Intercollegiate from Bastrop’s Wolfdancer Golf Club. The event will be the final of the regular season with Sam Houston readying for the Southland Conference Championship, April 24-26 in McKinney.
