HUNTSVILLE – Sam Houston State men’s golf has revealed its 10-tournament schedule, highlighted by the return of hosting the Bearkat Invitational, which takes place April 2-3, 2018 at Montgomery’s Walden on Lake Conroe Golf Club, head coach Brandt Kieschnick announced.

The Bearkats will take part in five fall tournaments, beginning with the Sam Hall Intercollegiate next Monday and Tuesday in Hattiesburg, Miss. The schedule features competition across six different states including a return to the Warrior Princeville Makai Invitational in Princeville, Hawaii.

A season ago, Sam Houston carded its best result in Hawaii, taking runner-up while besting a pair of top-25 teams. The Kats will play three events in the state of Texas including joining Houston and Rice to host the Bayou City Collegiate, Oct. 9-10, at Pearland’s Golfcrest Country Club.

After one year removed, the Bearkats will be back in action at the Wyoming Cowboy Classic from Whirlwind Golf Club in Phoenix, Ariz. In 2016, the program took runner-up at the event, led by current player Jake McCrory, who was co-champion at 11-under, 205.

The slate leads into the 55th Southland Conference Championships, held at the Dye Course at Stonebridge Ranch Country Club in McKinney. The winner of the 54-hole event will receive the league’s automatic qualifier to the NCAA Men’s Golf Championship.

Head coach Brandt Kieschnick on hosting the Bearkat Invitational…
“We co-host in the fall with Houston and Rice so I wanted to have single host. Walden is one of our home courses. It’s a great championship course and a top-rated course in Texas. We wanted to showcase that and have another event close to conference.”

Head coach Brandt Kieschnick on returning to Hawaii…
“That’s one of the best invites in the country. We were very fortunate to get the invite back. We were very close to winning last year. We are seeing the benefits of that success. We will see nationally ranked teams. We want to be a nationally ranked program. We’re happy to have a chance to go back where we’ve had some success.”

Head coach Brandt Kieschnick on the schedule…
“We’re very fortunate here at Sam Houston. We play a very competitive schedule. We open at Southern Miss which is a great golf course. We added Colorado State and get in the mountains there. We host with Houston and Rice which really showcases Houston golf. We will see some very good teams. One of our favorite events is the Border Olympics. It’s one of the most storied events. It’s a schedule that will set us up to get an at-large bid with our rankings and will prepare us to win a conference championship.”

Head coach Brandt Kieschnick on this year’s team…
“We were deep last year, we played nine players last year. This will by far be the deepest team we’ve ever had. It will be very competitive which is what we want. They will have to fight for a spot. This will be a great team. I feel very confident with the talent we have and what we’re bringing in.”
