For the second straight month, the Sam Houston golf teams have taken the top individual honors from the Southland Conference. Sophomore Hanna Alberto wins her second straight golfer of the month award and Noah Steele claims the honor for the first time.

Alberto competed in three events in the month of October, helping lead the Kats to a team title at their home event to get the month started. She shot a tournament low round of 68 in the second round and took second place individually.

“Winning for the second straight month shows the elite caliber of player she is,” said head coach Brandt Kieschnick. “Hanna is one of the most talented players I've been around and she is great at the game every day of the week. She is consistently at the top and represents our program with class. Coach (Tommy) Chain and I are so proud and honored to coach her.”

She also recorded a top-three finish this past weekend in the Little Rock Golf Classic at Diamante Country Club in Hot Springs, Ark. Alberto got a stroke better each round of the three-day event, opening with a 75 on Sunday, then shooting a 74 Monday and closed on Tuesday with a 73.

In her nine rounds in October, Alberto had a stroke average of 73.8.

Steele set a 54-hole, program record, firing a 17-under, 199, while finishing fourth and besting eight top-100 golfers at the Warrior Princeville Makai Invitational in Hawaii.

“I'm very proud of him,” Kieschnick said. “He's a grinder and works hard. He makes PGA Tour decisions everyday and he's an amazing player. He's playing at a very high level and the best is yet to come.”

The sophomore helped the Kats set a team 54-hole record while finishing sixth, ahead of three top-50 programs including Ole Miss, Colorado and Georgia Southern.

Steele finished in the top-25 in each of his three October events including taking 14th at the Southern Dunes Invitational -- the team’s fifth-straight top-five finish. It marked the first conference player of the week for the Kingston, Ontario, native.
