With a pair of rounds under par, Sam Houston golfer Jake McCrory leads the Bearkat Invitational at Walden.

McCrory opened the day with a 70 and followed that up with a 67 to vault to the top of the leaderboard. He will take a four shot lead into Tuesday’s final round.

As a team, the Bearkats are in second place, two shots back of UTRGV, who shot the best round of the day in round 2 with a 280. Sam Houston opened with a 285, giving them a five-shot lead after 18 holes. But a second-round 287 has the Kats in a battle for the team, title with 18 holes remaining.

William Holcomb is one of four golfers who are under par for the tournament, shooting rounds of 71 and 72 and sits in a tie for third at 1-under par.

Two other Bearkat golfers are in the top 10 with Austen Christiansen in 7th at 1-over par and Noah Steele in a tie for 10th at 3-over.

McCrory got his second round started strong, with an eagle on the par-5 No. 2 hole, his first to play in the second round. He then heated up at No. 9, birding five of the next seven holes, including three straight from 13-15.

The final round will get under way at 8:30 a.m. at Walden Golf Club in Montgomery.
