NORMAN, Okla. – The Sam Houston State men’s golf team wrapped up the final day of the NCAA Golf Norman Regional with a 10-over round of 298 to finish 12th in the regional.

Playing at the Jimmy Austin OU Golf Club, the Kats got off to a slow start. They started the day on No. 10 and played the first three holes at 5-over as a team.

“This week we just didn’t have our best stuff,” said head coach Brandt Kieschnick. “This is a great team and we’ve played great all year, but this is golf. There are some great teams here, and when you get this far into the post season you have to have your best stuff and we just didn’t have it.”

Austen Christiansen led the way for the Kats on Wednesday, playing a bogey-free round of 70. He had birdies on Nos. 14 and 5 to move him to a tie for 37th, the top individual finisher for the Bearkats in the Regional at 4-over for the Regional.

Levi Valadez and William Holcomb each finished in a tie for 50th at 8-over. Valadez had the second-best score of the day for the Kats with a 3-over, 75. Holcomb finished the day with a 79. Noah Steele closed the Regional with a 76 and finished in a tie for 62nd at 12-over. Jake McCrory was 65th at 15-over for the Regional after a 77 on Wednesday.

“We have a lot of guys coming back, and this was a great experience for them,” Kieschnick said. “They got a first-hand look at what it takes to advance out of this to an NCAA Championship. We are only going to grow as a team because of this experience.”

The Bearkats finished the year with a total score under par for the first time in program history.
