For the second straight year the Sam Houston State men’s golf team is headed to the NCAA Regionals, and they won’t have to travel very far to compete. On Wednesday, the NCAA selection committee announced the Kats will be one of 14 teams competing in Austin.

Competition will begin May 13th through the 15th at University of Texas Golf Club, where the Bearkats will be the No. 11 seed.

“This is a huge accomplishment for this program to once again be part of the NCAA Regionals,” said head coach Brandt Kieschnick. “I think the guys gained a lot of experience last season and know what it takes to advance. We have played and won some big tournaments this year, so I don’t think the stage is too boig for them.”

Last season the Bearkats took part in the Norman Regional hosted by University of Oklahoma. The Kats finished 12th last season, and Kieschnick said there are some lessons they will be able to take from that experience.

“I think the main thing they learned was you can’t afford to dig yourself in a hole too early,” he said. “We have to stay consistent and not get ahead of ourselves. There are good teams and this is going to be a grind, but I think they are going to be ready for it.”

One of the other factors that should help the Bearkats is getting to play in Texas. This will be the first time they have competed in a regional in the Lone Star State. They have previously played in the Auburn, Alabama and Seattle, Washington.

“The thing about playing close to home, is the weather conditions shouldn’t be a factor for us,” Kieschnick said. "If it is hot, windy or rainy, it is something we are going to be prepared for. I feel like we put a schedule together to prepare us for anywhere they would have sent us, but certainly there is a comfort level playing in Texas.”

The NCAA Championship is made up of six 54-hole regional tournaments. Thirteen teams and 10 individuals not on those teams will compete at each of three regionals while the other three regionals will have 14 teams and five individuals not on those teams. The low five teams and the low individual not on those teams from each regional will advance to the finals.
