HUNTSVILLE – Both the Sam Houston men’s and women’s golf teams are off to a great start this season, and on Wednesday, the league recognized them for it. Hanna Alberto and William Holcomb were named the Southland golfers of the month for September.
Alberto got the season off strong, winning the ORU Lady Maxwell Invitational after shooting 2-over for the three-round event. She had to go to a playoff to take the title outright, sinking a 30-foot birdie putt on the first hole.
She followed that up with a third place finish at the Hobble Creek Invitational in Springville, Utah. She fired back-to-back under par rounds, including a 3-under 68 in the second round. In her six competitive rounds in September, Alberto was under par on three of them and posted an average of 70.66.
“Hanna is a great ball striker and a fierce competitor,” said head coach Brandt Kieschnick. “She has great parents that have done a great job working with her game. She tries to be great every day. Her scoring average is 70 which is five shots below the school record. She is playing at an elite level. She is coming off a great summer as well. She is dreaming big and working hard.”
Holcomb was named Southland Conference Men’s Golfer of the Month for the first time in his career. During September, the Crockett native recorded a fourth-place finish and 18th place result while posting a stroke average of 70.66.
“Will is like a Navy Seal of golf,” Kieschnick said. “He is doing all of this on a broken foot. He is one of the hardest working guys. He is unbelievably wise with how he manages his game and golf courses. When you have desire, a great attitude, talent and a work ethic that’s impeccable, good things are going to come. His desire to get better is at a very professional level.”
His efforts helped lead the Bearkats to a season-opening win at the Sam Hall Intercollegiate, hosted by Southern Miss. There, Holcomb (71-72-70) used a 1-under, final round to card an even-par, 213, to finish two strokes off the lead.
As an encore, the Crockett High School product secured 18th at 2-over, 212, from the Ram Masters Invitational in Fort Collins, Colo. The result came against a field of 104 competitors while lifting Sam Houston to a fifth-place finisher.
Holcomb and the Kats return to action on Monday, hosting the Bayou City Collegiate alongside Houston and Rice from the par-72, 7,272-yard GolfCrest Country Club in Pearland. The two-day, 54-hole tournament is in its third year of existence.
The Bearkat women will travel to Seattle on Oct. 16-17 to compete in the Pat Harbottle Invitational hosted by University of Seattle.
