Jake McCrory fired a 66 on Sunday, and playing in their first tournament of the year, the Sam Houston men’s golf team finished 11th at the All-American Intercollegiate at the Golf Club of Houston in Humble.

As a team, the Bearkats shot 1-over par for the day and finished plus-3 for the tournament. Auburn, the tenth ranked team in the country won the event with a course record -42 over the three day event.

“The guys fought hard and we were really close to having a good finish,” said head coach Brandt Kieschnick. “We were ready to compete this week and the guys were grinding each shot. We had three guys finish under par for the week so that was encouraging.”

McCroy played a near flawless round on Sunday, shooting a bogey free round, posting a 66 and finishing the weekend 7th overall. Of the 99 players competing, 10 entered the weekend ranked by Golfstat.

“Jake played absolutely flawless,” Kieschnick said. He only made two bogeys the whole week and he played as a professional. He looked like a player that knew he was going to play well and knew how to do it!! That’s what we want & firing 66 the final round was huge for this team!  I’ve seen this coming and he’s going to build on this great event!!

This was one of the top fields the Kats will see this season, with five of the 18 teams ranked in the top 50, including three of the top 13 squads.

“This was a golf course that you could get after but if you missed the ball on the wrong side it could bite you quick,” Kieschnick said. “We have to get better managing the golf course but that will be an easy fix.”
