MONTGOMERY - The Sam Houston State men’s golf team got off to a slow start to move into third place after two rounds at the Bentwater Intercollegiate at Bentwater Country Club Monday.
The Bearkats shot 11-over 587 at the par-72, 6799-yard Miller Course on a cool, windy day and are two shots behind the leaders. Oral Roberts and Abilene Christian lead the tournament, which is being hosted by Sam Houston State, at 585 followed by the Bearkats, UTRGV (590), Texas State (591), Stephen F. Austin (594), New Mexico State (596), Houston Baptist (601) and Prairie View A&M (635).
Sam Houston State made a move up the leaderboard with a 4-over 292 in the second round. The Bearkats shaved three strokes off their first-round total.
Senior William Holcomb is tied for third at 2-under 142 after shooting even par in the second round and 2-under 70 to open the day. Senior Noah Steele is tied for 10th at even-par 144 with rounds of 1-over 73 and 1-under 71.
Sophomore Jack Randle shot rounds of 76 and 74 and is tied for 23rd at 6-over 150. Freshman Ting-Wei Hsieh cut five strokes off his first round with a 73 in round two to remain tied for 27th at 7 over, while sophomore Grayson Blunt is tied for 49th at 13-over 157.
Alex Summers of UTRGV leads the tournament at 8-under 136 after posting identical rounds of 68 Monday.
Bearkats sophomore Luis Carrera shot an even-par 72 in the opening round playing as an individual. He carded a 1-under 71 in round two to pull into a tie for sixth at 1-under.
Freshman Tristan Renaud is tied for 32nd at 9-over 153, and freshman Jordan Anderson is 54th at 16-over 160 both as individuals.
Round three is scheduled for Tuesday morning.
