DALLAS – The Sam Houston State Bearkat tennis team dropped their third match in a row on Friday afternoon, falling 7-0 to SMU at the SMU Tennis Complex.
The Bearkats fell to 2-3 on the season with the loss while the Mustangs improved to a perfect 3-0.
"SMU always fields very strong teams and while I was happy with our effort and several closely-contested matches, I felt we came up short on some of the little details that make us even more competitive," head coach Rob Hubbard said. "We'll definitely get to work on that this week as we have a very tough match next week at nationally-ranked Tulsa."
The Mustangs picked up an early 1-0 lead as they won the doubles competition in two matches. Sara Monarrez Yesaki and Ellie Zogg defeated SHSU's Fabienne Gettwart and Khee Yen Wee (6-1) after Liza Buss and Dasha Sharapova took down Mila Milanovic and Carrie Casey (6-3).
SMU followed by taking each of the singles matches in straight sets. Casey took her match the furthest, falling in a second-set tiebreak to Charline Anselmo (6-2, 7-6 (11-9)) in No. 4 singles. The Mustangs’ got a point from Buss at No. 1 singles as she picked up a win over Gettwart (6-2, 6-0), while Yesaki earned the No. 2 point with a win (6-3, 6-2) over Ema Barkovic.
Sharapova defeated Wee (6-3, 6-2) in the No. 3 spot, while Zogg knocked off Milanovic (6-1, 6-4) at No. 5 and Mary Wright won over Diane Friedrichs (6-2, 6-3) at No. 6 singles.
Sam Houston will now get eight days off before heading to Tulsa, Okla. for a pair of matches on Feb. 11-12. They will take on the Golden Hurricane on its home court on Saturday before battling Middle Tennessee State the following morning.
