HUNTSVILLE – The Sam Houston State Bearkats gave defending league champion Texas A&M-Corpus Christi all it could handle on Sunday afternoon, but couldn’t hold off the Islanders in dropping a 6-1 decision at the McAdams Tennis Center.
The Kats (5-10, 2-3 SLC) took one of three doubles matches and got a singles win from Khee Yen Wee while also pushing two other singles decisions to the limit before falling just short.
Wee’s singles win was her third in a rowand sixth in her last eight matches, putting her at 4-1 in league play this season. She provided the Kats with their lone point of the match in comeback fashion on the No. 3 court, outlasting Judit Vives 1-6, 7-6 (10-8).
The other Bearkat win came in doubles play when Mila Milanovic and Carrie Casey gave Sam Houston an early edge with a 6-2 victory over Louise Trigona and Marina Vicens Miquel at No. 2 play. But the Islanders (9-2, 3-1 SLC) responded, taking each of the next two matches to steal the doubles point and get out to a 1-0 lead.
Vicens Miquel made it a 2-0 Islander advantage with a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 6 play over Caitlyn Mitchell. Hortense Boscher followed that up with a 6-0, 6-1 victory on the top court over Ema Barkovic to get TAMUCC a point a way from clinching, which they did when Trigona finished off Casey in straight sets on the No. 4 line.
Wee followed that with her victory to get Sam Houston on the board and Milanovic nearly completed a comeback of her own in No. 5 play before falling to Maria Maldonado 2-6, 7-6, 12-10.
Fabienne Gettwart made things tough on the Islanders No. 2 player as well, dropping a late tiebreak to Jelena Dzinic in a 6-3, 6-3 (10-7) defeat.
Sam Houston will have nearly a week off before hitting the court again on Saturday at Central Arkansas.
