HUNTSVILLE – Mila Milanovic earned a three-set singles win, but was the only point Sam Houston State would tally in a 6-1 loss to McNeese on Sunday at the McAdams Tennis Center.
The Kats (8-11, 5-4 SLC) played uphill for the duration of the day, going in shorthanded against the Cowgirls (11-10, 6-4 SLC) in what was Sam Houston’s final home match of the season. Sam Houston was only able to field a pair of doubles teams and fell behind 1-0 early on as Hannah Brett and Sarah Jurakova took down Milanovic and Carrie Casey, 6-4, to clinch the point and render the second doubles match result unnecessary.
With the Kats only fielding five singles players, the Cowgirls started singles play with a 2-0 lead and it moved to 3-0 after the Kats had to retire on the No. 1 court as well. Phonexay Chitdara then provided the clinching point in the match with a straight-set win over Caitlyn Mitchell on the No. 5 court.
With the match clinched in McNeese’s favor, Milanovic got the Bearkats on the board with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Charoline Erlandsson at the No. 4 line. But the Cowgirls followed that Sam Houston win with victories on both the Nos. 2 and 3 courts to provide the match’s final margin.
Sam Houston will go on the road next week for its final two matches of the regular season at New Orleans and Southeastern Louisiana, starting Friday against the Privateers. The Kats will then turn their attention to the Southland Conference Tournament two weeks later in Beaumont.
