Game Story: Kats Take Down First-Place Lamar (4/1)

BEAUMONT – It was a resurgent 2017 season for Bearkat Women's Tennis under new head coach Rob Hubbard, but no win caught the attention of the Southland Conference more than a win in early April at Lamar.

The Kats had started off SLC play strong and found themselves at the .500 mark when they headed to Beaumont for an April 1 meeting with the Cardinals, who were leading the league at the time, having won eight matches in a row.

But Sam Houston put an end to that streak with a convincing 5-2 win, taking the doubles point before cinching the match with wins in each of the first three singles matches to finish.

“These girls just continue to amaze me,” Hubbard said following the match. “To go on the road and get this win against the first-place team in the conference just demonstrates the resolve each of them have.”

The clinching point came from the Bearkats' No. 1 player, Fabienne Gettwart, who handed eventual SLC Player of the Year Katya Lapayeva her lone singles loss of the league season in straight sets. Lapayeva entered the match with a 14-2 singles record on the season, but had no answer for Gettwart who took the first set 6-4 before holding on for a 7-6 win in the second set to secure the match.
