Recognized Tuesday as one of 12 student-athletes honored on the 2018 Academic All-Southland Conference team, Fabienne Gettwart becomes the 27th Sam Houston women’s team player to receive the award in the Bearkats league history.

The senior marketing and economics double major from Dreiech, Hessen, Germany produced a 3.73 overall grade point average coming into the 2018 spring season. She received her Bearkat degree on May 18.

Gettwart earned All-Southland Conference honors in both singles and doubles during the 2018 season as she helped lead the Bearkat tennis team to a school record 14 victories and a third-place finish in the Southland Conference race. She completed her four-year career ranked No. 9 in all-time Bearkat singles wins (57) and No. 14 in doubles victories with all partners (41).

During the 2018 campaign, Gettwart posted individual Southland Conference won-loss mark of 9-2 at No. 1 singles, the second highest season total ever by an SHSU player. She also produced 13-6 overall dual match record at No. 1 position and went 17-12 overall including tournament play.

Sam Houston women’s tennis continued its long tradition of academic excellence during the 2017 fall semester by posting a department high 3.9 overall team GPA. Gettwart, Carrie Casey, Lusine Chobanyan, Clarrissa Escamilla, Mila Milanovic and Sahaja Yamalapalli all produced perfect 4.0 fall semester individual GPAs.
