HUNTSVILLESahaja Yamalapalli and Lusine Chobanyan both won their individual flights and led the Sam Houston State tennis team through a successful home tournament to close out the fall season, Sunday afternoon at McAdams Tennis Center.

Yamalapalli was the champion of the A Flight after posting a perfect 3-0 singles record over the weekend. She came out with a dominating 2-0 (6-1, 6-2) victory in the first round of the invitational and set down Texas A&M-Corpus Christi’s Carolina Bulatovic with a pair of 6-2 sets to advance to the championship match. After winning the first set 6-4, she put the final nail in the coffin and secured a 6-2 set victory to win the A Flight.

Carrying over her success from ITA Regionals just two weeks ago, Chobanyan was perfect through three matches en route to an individual title in the B Flight. She won her opening round 2-0 and easily moved past her next opponent 2-0 to advance to the championship match where she would face teammate Karla De La Luz Montalvo.

De La Luz Montalvo posted a dominant, 2-0 win over UIW’s Alejandra Tamayo in the first round and clinched her next match in another perfect 2-0 effort to advance to the finals. However, it was Chobanyan who would come away the victor as she posted a 6-3 win in the first set and closed out the B Flight with a narrow, 7-5 victory in set two.

Petra Kaszas fought tooth and nail in the C flight as all three of her matches came down to a tiebreaker. She edged out Katarina Sasroga of UTRGV with a 2-1 win (6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (4)) but dropped her next match 2-1. However, she rallied in her next match and set down UTRGV’s Ana Platisa in three sets to finish third overall in Flight C.

Picking up three individual victories, Stevie Ybarra was the top finisher in the D Flight - which followed a round-robin format. Sophomore walk-on Asni Hill had a big weekend as she won her first collegiate match as a Bearkat over UIW’s Jayci Stewart, 6-2, 6-2.

Kicking off doubles action in the A Flight, Karla De La Luz Montalvo and Yamalapali teamed up for a 6-4 doubles win over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi’s Carolina Bulatovic and Vanessa Reinicke.

Chobanyan and Malou Goes downed UIW’s Taylor Parkinson and Jayci Stewart, 6-1 to kick off the C flight doubles and the team of Roos Gerritsen and Isidora Zivkovic soundly defeated Sandra Putz and Alicia Thai of UTRGV, 6-2, to grab another Bearkat victory. The duos grabbed one more victory each to close out the fall season.

The conclusion of the Bearkat Invitational marks the end of the Bearkats’ fall season. The squad will return to the court on Friday, Jan. 11 for an 11 a.m. at UTRGV in Edinburg, Texas. For all the latest information on the Sam Houston State tennis team, visit or follow @BearkatsWTEN on Twitter.
