ABILENE – The Sam Houston State Bearkats won three singles matches, but could not overcome dropping the doubles point in a 4-3 loss to Abilene Christian on Friday at the Eager Tennis Complex.
The Kats (7-4, 2-1 SLC) dropped matches on both the Nos. 2 and 3 doubles courts to fall behind 1-0 and despite pulling out victories on three of the top four singles courts, were outlasted by ACU (6-7, 2-0 SLC) on the No. 6 court to surrender the clinching point.
SHSU trailed 3-0 after ACU’s Allison Stewart and Autumn Bellow each won at Nos. 5 and 3 singles, but the Kats began to come back. Isidora Zivkovic got Sam Houston on the board with a 7-5, 6-3 victory over Sarah Adams on the No. 2 court and Sahaja Yamalpalli followed with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Nini Memishishi on the feature court in No. 1 singles to cut the lead to 3-2.
But ACU’s Ileana Mocciola was able to hang on for a 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 win over Petra Kaszas on the No. 6 court to secure the match for the Wildcats. Lusine Chobanyan was also able to get a Bearkat point on the board as she won the No.3 point with a 6-4, 7-6 (8-6) win over Jordan Henry.
SHSU will try to rebound on the road on Sunday when they travel to San Antonio to take on Incarnate Word. First serve is set for 11:00 a.m.
